Senior Embedded Systems Engineer | San Diego

The Embedded Systems Engineer is a key stakeholder who designs, develops, and maintains high-quality embedded solutions; utilizing embedded operating systems, and in-house developed hardware and cloud platforms. The ideal candidate will have experience with developing platform architectures, allowing external parties to develop modularized software to be launched on internally developed hardware. This individual will help direct the technical vision of overall embedded product strategy of the company.  

The Embedded Systems Engineer is focused on creating an ecosystem at the intersection of software, firmware, and hardware. The ideal candidate has in-depth experience with embedded device driver development, along with excellent problem-solving skills. You will be developing and testing software, but also thinking abstractly about how that software can be deployed to various use cases. The Embedded Systems Engineer possesses a firm understanding of C, object oriented programming, Linux operating systems, product development best practices, and test-driven product development concepts. The Embedded Systems Engineer is collaborative, conducting and/or participating in hardware and software design reviews to ensure technical quality. Additionally, this candidate will be working in conjunction with hardware design and software development team members to ensure timely delivery of embedded software and firmware.

The Embedded Systems Engineer will strive to understand voice of the customer, and work closely with Product Management for road-map development. This person is also instrumental in the bring up and verification of hardware functionality during all phases of the product development.

 

THE WORK:

  • Development & delivery of embedded software focused on machine-to-cloud communications
  • Design, architect, and develop embedded firmware solutions following best practices
  • Lead continual development & delivery of embedded software and architecture, creating innovative development environments and products for IIoT applications
  • Provide integration assistance of kernel drivers / peripheral software with higher application layers
  • In cooperation with the hardware engineering team, design and develop a low-power DSP interface for measuring analog signals from attached sensors at a high-rate, and storage and transfer of summary information, or significant events
  • Develop architectures that allocate current and foreseeable future requirements into discrete partitions, ensuring scalability, robustness, and low complexity
  • Maintain an overall system vision, making technical decisions, and keeping all stakeholders constantly informed and in alignment on system development deliverables
  • Understand the voice of the customer, and work closely with Product Management for road-map development
  • Foster an inclusive environment that shares knowledge and engages all peers in the company strategic vision
  • Identify bottlenecks in existing development processes, and drive solutions
  • Support hardware bring-up verification with complete support packages including kernel, drivers, and firmware
  • Significantly contribute to innovation, continuous improvements and other organizational change
  • Advance borderless collaboration with peers to develop a common global platform that is the foundation of all sensemetrics embedded software systems
  • Mentor, influence, and coach team members to enhance engineering skills and achieve shared goals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering
  • 5+ years of architectural or platform leadership experience
  • 2+ years of experience architecting a library or SDK consumed by others
  • Successful track record of managing cross-functional teams with tight deadlines in a high-stress environment
  • Experience with project delivery for large, cross functional projects
  • Mastery level understanding of embedded systems and hardware/software interactions
  • Expert knowledge of object-oriented programming with a working knowledge of one or more common languages such as Python, C++, C, Java, etc.
  • Familiarity with software development practices including approaches to design, implementation, testing, documentation, and debugging
  • Demonstrated experience programming in resource-constrained embedded environments
  • Familiarity with Linux user and kernel environments
  • Data driven decision maker with solid mathematical skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A deep understanding or functional expertise in one or many of the following areas:
    • IoT
    • Cloud Architecture
    • Radio Networking
    • Communications
    • Sensor Technology
  • Real time ARM, DSP / Signal Processing
  • Device driver development experience
  • Familiar with using Agile Development methodologies and Scrum
  • Demonstrated strong people management and influencing skills with proven ability and enthusiasm to lead, motivate, inspire, develop, and encourage people, from C-level suite to individual contributors in multiple functional areas
